La Possession and GreenYellow, via their electric mobility subsidiary RunCharge, have inaugurated 30 new charging points for electric vehicles on Reunion Island.
While the number of electric vehicles on the island is growing rapidly, with over 16,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road by 2023, the island faces a major challenge: the expansion of charging systems.
To meet this growing demand, the commune of La Possession, in partnership with RunCharge, the electric mobility subsidiary of GreenYellow Austral, inaugurated 30 new charging points for electric vehicles. The event took place as part of European Sustainable Mobility Week, putting La Possession at the forefront of the transition to electric mobility on Reunion Island.
These new installations include fast charging stations (22 kW DC), suitable for high-traffic areas, and 7 kW stations, more suited to residential areas.
Progressive, ambitious deployment
To date, 6 of the 14 sites are already up and running, covering key locations such as Camp Magloire, chemin Bœuf Mort, the Daniel Narcisse gymnasium, Collège Jean Albany, La Possession town hall and the Nelson Mandela center, providing optimum geographical coverage for users.
The remaining 8 sites will be commissioned by the end of 2024, guaranteeing full coverage for local users.
RunCharge, which supervises the installation of the charging stations, is the leading network for electric vehicle charging on Reunion Island, with 22 sites in service for a total of 130 charging points spread across the island.
Vanessa Miranville, Mayor of La Possession, comments: “The charging stations for electric vehicles are an integral part of La Possession’s sustainable mobility policy. They reinforce the commune’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles, a cleaner alternative to thermal vehicles. I am proud to be able to offer our fellow citizens concrete, modern and efficient solutions, encouraging them to travel in a more sustainable way and, at the same time, proud to contribute to the island’s ecological transition.”
Pierre Marouby, Managing Director of RunCharge, adds: “We are continuing to expand our network to make electric recharging accessible to all the people of Reunion, everywhere on the island. In this way, we are pursuing our roadmap towards our ultimate goal: greening electricity, electrifying uses”.
An expanding network for sustainable mobility
This new network of charging stations in La Possession contributes to the objectives set out in La Réunion’s Energy Planning Program (“PPE”), which calls for the installation of 3,400 charging stations to support a fleet of 33,700 electric vehicles by 2028. The development of this network, including solar and grid-connected solutions, aims to reduce the island’s carbon footprint and facilitate the transition to cleaner mobility.
